James
Sarah had also planned for her to marry someone of equal or greater social standing, to further cement their family’s position in society or better still elevate them in the society.
Her engagement with Edwards Stirling was the talk of the country for a year, that was as long as they had been engaged.
It was a ceremony of opulence and grandeur.
Emily was adorned in a gown of ivory silk, her train trailing behind her like a cloud of gossamer.
Diamonds sparkled on her brow, and rubies gleamed at her neck and wrists. Her hair was piled high on her head, and her eyes were bright with anticipation.
Edward was resplendent in a suit of midnight blue, his cravat a masterpiece of fine craftsmanship.
The ceremony was held in a grand lavish banquet hall, its ceilings painted and designed with gold.
The air was thick with power and prestige, the hall was filled with the who’s who of the society. Heads of state, Ambassadors, and Dignitaries from around the world were in attendance.
The tables were groaning with delicacies from around the world, from succulent roast meat to exotic fruits to vegetables.Ccontent © exclusive by Nô/vel(D)ra/ma.Org.
The guests were treated to a variety of wines, each more exquisite than the last. The whole affair was a feast for the eyes as well as the palate.

The Thorntons began holding an annual carnival for the youth to promote youth power in the state and to further solidify their daughter in the society.
Since they did not have a male child, they decided to train their daughter, Emily to become a confident and great woman influencing the state.
Their greed to be part of the elites of the state led them to Edward. They wished to marry her off to a rich man. This was one major downside in the role Sarah played in the life of her daughter.
The family had no idea what they were about getting themselves into.. Because of riches and influence, they gave their daughter out to Edward.
“You didn’t recognize me in your speech or even during your vote of thanks. Why is that?” Edward queried as they got into the car.
“Everyone knows you as my fiance already. You’re practically everywhere in my life. Who on Earth would dare miss you. Besides I didn’t find it necessary “. Emily said to him. She was too tired of his childish tantrums
“Ohh, I see, I’m not important to you right?” he accused childishly.
“I never said so, Edward. Please do not force words into my mouth “. Emily blurted.
“That’s nice, I see.” he said, stepping out of the car while pulling his tie off.
(Emily’s POV)
I’m getting tired living with Edward. When he is not complaining about everything, he is rather obsessed with me.
I got engaged to him to please my parents. It seems my happiness is going for this decision.
You know, I never intended to get married to Edward. I had a friend whilst growing up, his name is James. We did everything in common and I had peace and happiness while I was with him.
He was our gardener’s son.
We met at a game event hosted by my parents for the youths. I was made to believe that the social gathering my parents kept hosting was all because of me.
I was going to be a grown up someday, but for now my parents planned a game event for little kids alongside the youth program. This was so I can learn “socialising”, as mum loves calling it.
Being the child of the host, I was there earlier to oversee things alongside my mum.
I was tired and bored and sat down under a plastic maple tree beside the door and was just staring at the crowded room filled with kids having fun.
When I got bored of staring at the room full of kids, I began playing with the leaves from the tree when the door of the hall opened. I was curious as to who the next weird kid is, that was when I made eye contact with the most handsome boy
He gave me a nervous wave. I, feeling a bit awkward, waves back and I walked over to him.
“Hi, my name is Emily.” I introduced myself to him, smiling.
He smiled back at me shyly and answered, “Hi Emily, I’m James.”
There’s an awkward pause as we both try to think of something to say. This was a first for me. James ended up breaking the awkward silence between us.
“So,” he said, “I know this is probably the least exciting place, but I’m actually kind of excited about the games we’re going to have later.”
I was a little surprised that he seemed genuinely interested in the games. “You like games?” I asked.
“I guess I do,” James replied smiling.
I considered how to keep the conversation going. “So, what kind of game do you prefer ?” I asked.
“I’m not really sure you’re expecting this answer,” he said. ” No one seems to like this particular game, I love chess. My dad usually teaches me every evening.
“Really? I love chess too”, I replied excitedly. ” I play with our gardener. I can assure you that he is a guru.”
“A gardener teaches you?” He asked curiously, wanting to hear more.
“Yes, our gardener.” I replied.
“My dad is a gardener, he works with the Thorntons.” James said.
“I am the only daughter of the Thortons, that means your dad works at my house.” I solved the riddle for him, duh!
“Oh. I’ve heard so much about you. My dad tells me how excited you get when you both are playing chess”.
“Really? He does?” I was touched.
“Yes. Always.” he affirmed.
“So tell me, what’s your favorite piece on the chess board?” I asked James.
“The king is the most important piece,” he replied. “It is known for its stability and perseverance. The king is also a cautious and protective piece, always focused on the bigger picture.”
“Wow!” I said, sounding impressed.
