A Human’s Guide to Surviving Magical Mishaps

Rule 23- Lying is only a problem if you get caught.

"Oh no!" Lucy looks absolutely devastated and I feel terribly guilty. Oddly, Ashton is the only one who seems unbothered.

"Do you have something that is a similar size and shape to your 'I.D'?" He says I.D. awkwardly then scrunches his face. Apparently he doesn't enjoy the shortened version of the word.

"I probably do, let me check my purse." The two of them watch me pull out my purse and dig around. I have my own I.D and my credit card, but I also have an I.D. card that I use sometimes at work. I hold it up and Ashton smiles. "Perfect. May I see your identification card as well?” He holds out a hand and I give it to him. He studies it closely for a moment, examining both sides of my drivers licence thoroughly before handing it back to me. He closes his eyes for a moment to focus, then the card remaining in his hand blurs. He glances at it before handing it to me to check his work. In my hands is a drivers licence with Ashton's name and photo on it. It's basically perfect except... Other than the name and picture, all the details are the same as mine. The birthday, the address, even the licence numbers.

"You copied my licence?" I ask.novelbin

"It is a glamour. I did not change the numbers as I would have to be able to picture each individual change. If it is examined too closely the glamour will fail but if you did not immediately see through it then it should pass a quick inspection." He says proudly.

"Wait, you remembered all the numbers on my licence?" I ask incredulously.

"Yes, although I doubt that I can hold it for long and as my memory fails the details will become less accurate.” He admits. Lucy is staring and snatches the fake I.D. from me.

"This is AMAZING. Is it magic? It sounds so useful!" She gushes while turning the card over to check the back. I take it back from her and give it to Ashton.

"It should work. Just maybe when we have our I.D. checked you and I shouldn't go one after the other in case someone recognises the numbers.” I decide. Ashton nods and Lucy oh so generously volunteers to stand in line between the two of us. We eventually reach the front of the line and I'm incredibly relieved to find that there are TWO guys checking I.D.s so as soon as Ashton hands his fake I.D. over, I make sure to hand mine to the other guy. We get inside with no trouble and don't feel bad about tricking them to get in. Ashton is definitely old enough, he just doesn't have any human forms of identification. I suppose I could have called the mayor for help, but I really don't want to call him unless I have to and I don't want to owe him anything. Besides, trying to explain that I need him to get the fae into a club so we can go dancing for a friend's birthday doesn't seem like a good reason to bother the mayor in the middle of the night. We make it inside and pay our entry cover with no issues. After Ashton removes his glamour from my work I.D. and returns it to me we then immediately head to the bar to meet Marcus. He is there with two other friends I have never met before. He introduces them and I immediately forget their names, but they seem friendly enough. It won't be a problem hanging out with them tonight. I AM glad I came though, it would have been a little awkward for Lucy being the only girl to attend this gathering. Then again, I'm not sure she would mind. She's always been outgoing and she would probably enjoy the attention.

"Drinks! We need drinks!" Marcus announces.

"Dude, we work retail, we ALWAYS need drinks." I comment and everyone laughs.

"Do you drink much alcohol?" I ask Ashton and he nods.

“Yes, we will have to see if your human drinks are comparable.” He has a glint in his eye that tells me he is looking forward to this.

"Great, if you want a drink just let me know and we can get more. But for starters, birthday shots for Marcus." I grin and Marcus starts handing out shots which one of his friends shouted us. We all thank him and have fun showing Ashton how to clink his glass with everyone before we all down them quickly. Lucy is a pro and takes her drink easily without so much as a grimace, as does Marcus and one of his friends. But his other friend and I both kind of cough a little bit after taking the shot and clear out throats. The guy makes awkward eye contact with me and shrugs. Apparently I'm not the only one who isn't much of a drinker. Surprisingly, Ashton doesn't so much as wince. I guess he is used to alcohol. I raise an eyebrow and he shrugs.

"It is... not as strong as some of the drinks I am used to." He says in way of explanation. He seems to be trying to hint at something but I am not positive what. Probably something to do with him being fae. We discussed earlier that it would be better if he didn't advertise that fact while he is here. Oh well, I'll ask him about it later. I'm just asking for a glass of water to clear my throat a little when a girl approaches Ashton who is standing just behind me. I eavesdrop and tell myself that I'm doing it to be helpful because it's my job to help him and keep an eye on him.

"Hi, I was wondering if I could get you a drink?" She offers. Well that was bold. But I suppose I shouldn't be surprised. She probably didn't want to wait and risk him being picked up by someone else.

"Ah, no thankyou. Katerina told me I should speak to her if I want a drink." He says and I nearly choke on my water. Does he realise that he was just rejecting her? I have no idea. Do fae buy people drinks as a way to express interest? Either way the girl sighs, awkwardly apologises and leaves. Yeah, she definitely thinks I'm his girlfriend.

"Are you aware that she was flirting with you?" I ask him, trying to figure out how intentional his actions were. He shrugs.

"I was not positive, but I suspected there was some meaning behind the offer of a drink.” He admits.

"Right, so if someone buys the entire group a drink that's fine, and a friend can get you drinks and it's no big deal. But if a stranger offers you a drink it's usually flirtation." I give a dumbed down explanation. I don't have time right now to explain all the social rules behind accepting and offering drinks, but hopefully that's enough information for him to avoid offending someone or leading someone on.

"I believe I understand. Is there anything else I should be aware of while I am here?" He asks and I consider.

"Uhm, just be aware that people on the dance floor can be really pushy and grabby, although I don't know what it's like for men so it might be a little different." I really have no idea what I should warn him about. I'm saved from having to think on it further by Marcus and Lucy who drag us out to the dance floor.
