The Day Our Promise Breaks

Chapter 26

Evelyn clung to Charles, her body bouncing as he walked. The bouncing made her stomach churn. Her beautiful face twisted in discomfort. Just as they reached the bedside, Evelyn felt a wave of nausea.

Charles' expression changed instantly, and his steps halted. "Evelyn, don't you dare..."

Before Charles could finish his threatening words, Evelyn vomited all over him. All he could say was, "Wow." The arousal in him was instantly doused.

Without hesitation, he flung Evelyn onto the bed as if discarding trash.

Evelyn let out a muffled groan of discomfort.

Charles stood by the bed, staring at Evelyn, who had vomited all over him yet remained clean herself. His face darkened.

The wine was fragrant, but the vomit was extremely foul-smelling. The pungent smell aggressively invaded his nostrils. It was nauseating.

At that moment, Charles felt an urge to strangle Evelyn. He couldn't bear it for a second, turned and strode into the bathroom.

Half an hour later, Charles emerged from the bathroom with a cold face. He put on the new clothes that were delivered, didn't glance at Evelyn again, and left with a scowl.

The following month was a busy one for Evelyn.

She devoted all her energy to winning the million-dollar prize in the competition and buying Charlie a burial plot in a good location.

Day and night, she poured her heart and soul into her work. Now, all that was left was to wait for the results.

In a blink, it was the day of the award ceremony.

Backstage, Evelyn ran into Samuel.

"Samuel." Evelyn approached him respectfully and greeted him warmly.

Samuel was pleased. He was always serious, but now his face softened with a rare tenderness.

The award ceremony was in the afternoon, and the results were already out. He watched Evelyn with admiration evident in his eyes. He couldn't help but sigh, "Evelyn, I knew it. As long as you participated, you would definitely be the champion." He had said the same thing to her five years ago, so bringing it up now made his intentions clear.

Evelyn felt somewhat surreal. She had given her all in this competition, but until the very last moment, her heart was still in suspense.

She desperately needed that million dollars. She wanted to lay Charlie to rest as soon as possible, hoping that Charlie could be reincarnated into a happy family soon.

Charlie deserved to be cherished and pampered. In this life, being her daughter was too harsh for Charlie.

Evelyn suppressed the excitement in her heart and asked cautiously, "Samuel, what do you mean?"

"I'm looking forward to your celebration. Don't forget to invite me." Samuel patted Evelyn's shoulder. That was his affirmation.

"Sure." Evelyn held back tears, nodding vigorously.

After Samuel left, Evelyn's tears could no longer be contained. She covered her lips, striding into the nearby restroom. She locked the door behind her, and the tears flowed freely.

...

Ten minutes later, Evelyn emerged from the restroom. She had been too nervous to eat lunch at noon.

Once she relaxed, she felt extremely hungry. She decided to grab a meal nearby before returning for her makeup.

After eating, Evelyn walked out of the restaurant.

From a distance, she saw two familiar figures. It was Charles and Dahlia.

Dahlia was gently holding Charles' arm, looking so very intimate.

The organizer and chief judge of the competition were walking with them and extremely respectful towards Charles.

Evelyn saw the smile on Dahlia's face, and her heart skipped a beat. A sense of unease crept up.noveldrama

She shook her head, trying not to overthink.

...

There were four hours left until the award ceremony in the afternoon.

Evelyn was backstage getting her makeup done when her phone suddenly rang. She saw it was Samuel, and her unease deepened.

"Sorry, I need to take this call. I'll be right back."

Evelyn apologized to the makeup artist and stood up to answer the call in the hallway, "Hi Samuel."

"Evelyn, don't dwell on what I said in the hallway earlier. There will be other opportunities."

These words shocked Evelyn so much that she nearly dropped her phone. But she couldn't give up hope and asked, "Professor, what do you mean?"
