In the past, Elizabeth might have felt dejected for a while. However, she felt an unexpected sense of relief this time.
When she returned home, her parents asked about what happened at the summit.
Elizabeth brushed them off with a few vague sentences. Then, she excused herself by saying she was tired and retreated to her room.
She began to cry in fear the moment she dropped her luggage. However, Elizabeth was too afraid to make any noise.
The next day, Elizabeth “fell ill“. She sent an email requesting sick leave to Paul’s inbox. After that, she didn’t show up at the lab for seven days straight. Paul told them as such when Sandy and Silas asked about her.
“She’s sick?”
“What kind of illness? Is it serious?”
Paul replied expressionlessly, “I don’t know.” Then, he turned back to the lab bench, his figure distant and cold.
Silas frowned. Given his knowledge of Paul, he knew something wasn’t right after having worked with him for many years!
However, it wasn’t appropriate for him to pry further from his position as this situation concerned another member of the lab.
Silas suppressed his curiosity and resumed his work. Despite that, his attitude became far more focused and serious than usual. He even refrained from his usual banter. novelbin
On the other hand, Sandy wasn’t as perceptive.
At that moment, she genuinely believed Elizabeth had come down with a serious illness. Since she couldn’t get any useful information from Paul, she turned to Bryan for answers.
“Do you
think Silas and I should bring some fruit to visit her? We’ve worked together for so long–we’re practically family now.”
However, Bryan had been in a daze from the moment Sandy asked what illness Elizabeth had and whether she was hospitalized.
Was Elizabeth sick? And she asked for sick leave from Paul?
Why hadn’t she told him anything?
She didn’t even answer his calls….
Indeed, it had been three days since Elizabeth returned home. Bryan had been trying to reach her, but her phone was either off or unreachable

He had been sending her messages on WhatsApp and Facebook. He sent them every day whenever he thought of her. However, there was no response on her end.
It was as if Elizabeth had vanished into thin air!
The past two days had left Bryan troubled and on edge. He was worried that something. terrible might have happened to her. He even tried to contact her family, but to his dismay, he realized he didn’t even know her parents‘ names despite being in a relationship for nearly a year, let alone how to reach them.
The anxiety and worry caused Bryan to lose sleep every night. He lost more than five pounds in just two days. With dark circles around his eyes, he looked pale and haggard.
“Bry? Bry!”
“Huh? Sandy, what did you just say?”
“I’ve noticed that you haven’t been looking well lately. Is your mom’s condition still unstable? You mentioned she was still in the hospital last time. Has she been discharged yet?”
‘She… she’s been discharged. Thanks for asking, Sandy. I’m fine.”
“That’s good to hear. Your mom just recovered, and now Lizzy’s having issues. You’ve been having a tough time lately…”
Bryan could only force a dry laugh.
His mom was perfectly healthy and hadn’t been ill at all. The reason he lied about it was to have an excuse to skip the summit and give his spot to Elizabeth.
As for Elizabeth being sick… He had no knowledge about it whatsoever. If Sandy hadn’t brought it up, he might not have even known.
Sandy continued, “Do you think Silas and I should go over to Lizzy’s-”
“There’s no need. Lizzy’s fine. It’s just a minor illness. She’ll be back in a few days. No need to make such a big deal out of it,” Bryan replied.
“Alright, if you say so. After all, you’re her boyfriend. I’ll take your word as hers.”
Bryan quickly nodded with a smile.
Two more days passed. Instead of Elizabeth’s return, he received news that she had been dismissed from her position.
