Chapter 28
Vincent’s expression soured once more. Clearly, it was a blot on his past he still found hard to swallow.
The thought of his fiancée, his high school sweetheart, hooking up with another guy and getting busted in a hotel by him was too much to bear.
She shielded the other guy at every turn, refusing to spill the beans on who he was, and even had the nerve to have the guy’s kid.
“Kristin, aren’t you looking for a school for your child? I heard the butler’s son has a place in a top– notch school district, complete with a kindergarten, elementary, and middle school in the neighborhood. Marry him, and you’ll get your child’s education in the bag,” Ruby mentioned casually.
Kristin had no clue how vile they could get. The burn on her hand throbbed painfully behind her back. She didn’t dare fight back, nor did she offer any objections.
“So, you want to fix the little bastard’s schooling? Ah, are you going to tie the knot or not?” Vincent was itching to see how far Kristin would go for that man’s child and how shameless she could be.
Seeing Kristin stay mum, Vincent got antsy. “Get lost.”
Kristin picked up the shattered plate off the floor and walked out.
“Vinny, since you’ve agreed, I’ll get right on it. The butler has been slaving away for the FitzGerald family for years. It’s only right we lend a hand,” Ruby said, her face a picture of kindness and generosity.
Vincent cuddled Ruby to console her. “Sure, whatever you want to do is fine by me.”
As for Kristin, she had it coming. She was just one of those who couldn’t survive without a man, and this was her just deserts.
Kristin checked the time after rinsing her scalded hand with cold water downstairs.
It was already seven in the evening. Kristin wanted to know if Summer had dinner.
Just two more hours, and she could head home.
“Where’s Kristin? That tramp spilled the soup meant for Miss Ruby and even scalded her. I’ll skin her alive.”
The nanny cursed as she searched for Kristin, who was scared out of her wits. She ducked into the study, curling up in a corner.
She was spooked, terrified. But before she kicked the bucket, she had to make some cash for her brother and Summer.
She must admit that Vincent’s ten grand a month was quite the draw
Her job prospects were slim without a college degree. Maybe she could waitress and earn a few grand a month at best
Suddenly, the study light flicked on
Frightened, Kristin scurried behind the curtain into a comer
Wasn’t the nanny saying this room was off–limits, only kept tidy because it was rarely used?

Kristin’s fear peaked as she accidentally knocked into a nearby ornament.
Back at his place, Rhett was met with a faint rustling sound from a corner as soon as he stepped into his study
His brow furrowed, not pleased. Was Eve’s little brat sneaking in again?
He had made it clear to the staff that no one, especially that little rat Milo was allowed in his study.
Rhett wasn’t a fan of kids, especially spoiled ones.
Milo had been spoiled rotten by the Gladstone and FitzGerald families.
Rhett pulled back the curtain, his expression dark as he caught a glimpse.
Kristin shrank back in alarm, trembling all over, her eyes wide with fear as she looked up at
him.
Her eyes were beautiful, bright, and eternally pure and clear.
Rhett paused, then frowned. “Ms. Turner, are you doing it on purpose?” Crouching before Kristin, Rhett mocked.
There were plenty of rumors about Kristin in Silvergrove City, most of which were about her promiscuity and cunning nature.
Rhett didn’t buy into gossip, but when rumors persisted, they looked like facts, casting a bad image of Kristin.
Moreover, Kristin had been popping up in Rhett’s line of sight lately, making it hard not to be suspicious.
In the past, women had gone to great lengths to lure him, showing up at the FitzGerald family by any means necessary.
Some high society girls in Silvergrove City have even worked as maids at the FitzGerald Mansion to get close to him.
This sort of thing got on Rhett’s nerves.
“No… it’s not… I didn’t mean to…” Kristin stammered in fear, her voice quivering.
“Where’s Kristin? Seen her? That little hussy, always skulking off somewhere”
“Not lazing around, then she’s thieving. She needs a good thrashing.”
“I’ll beat her senseless.”
Outside, the nanny’s voice was full of curses.
Kristin clasped her hands together in a plea, begging Rhett not to hand her over.
Rhett frowned, his gaze settling on Kristin’s reddened hand.
Without a word, he got up and left.
Kristin was petrified, thinking Rhett was going to snitch to the nanny.
Clutching herself in terror, Kristin hoped that the nanny wouldn’t be too harsh and that her brother and Summer wouldn’t notice.
She had to endure. For her brother and her child, there was nothing she couldn’t withstand as long as she was dead and wouldn’t drag them down anymore.
“Just hold on a little longer.” She thought inwardly.
Once she had atoned for her sins, she could be free.
After a while, someone pulled back the curtain again. It wasn’t the nanny who returned but Rhett.
He had brought a first–aid kit and got some burn ointment.
